Community participation in NCI-sponsored clinical trials
Community Oncology and Prevention Trials Research Group, National Cancer Institute, Rockville, MD
In 2004, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) spent $800 million on cancer-related clinical trials. Taking part in NCI-sponsored trials offers an excellent opportunity for community oncologists to integrate current standard-of-care and clinical resources into the practice setting. Most importantly, patients ultimately benefit. Other articles in this series focus on regulatory compliance and staff training, both of which are crucial to dealing with the increasing complexity of the current trials. Here we’ll focus on how to successfully participate in NCI trials. For that, physicians must understand the organizational structure that governs resource and funding allocation. A resource list at the end provides essential contacts.
