Assessing family history is a critical part of oncology consultations, especially for patients with breast and ovarian cancers. If a patient’s family history indicates an increased risk of inherited malignancies, it’s appropriate to discuss genetic testing with her as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Oncologists, whether or not they coordinate with a genetic counselor need to be well versed in risk assessment, screening, and its impact on treatment options. As the tools and technology of genetic testing have been developed, key resources have become available to busy oncologists so that they can provide this service with confidence.
